Course Overview

This one day course helps schools to develop a structured approach to the teaching of phonics and spelling across the Primary age range. It is suitable for headteachers, subject leaders, foundation Stage, key stage 1 and key stage 2 teachers.

Course Objectives

The course objectives include :

  • The daily phonic session in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1
  • The content of all six phases of phonics
  • Games and activities for all the phonic phases
  • Assessing and tracking the progress children are making
  • The Y1 Screening Check
  • Phonics in KS2
  • The teaching of spelling
  • Developing an action plan for the teaching of phonics and spelling

Detailed course outline and session time table

Session 1

•    The role of phonics in the teaching of early reading and writing. •    The vocabulary of phonics.

Session 2

•    The daily phonic session. •    The four parts to the daily phonic session. •    What does a good phonic session look like?

Session 3

•    The content of the six phases. •    Expectations for each year group. •    Games and activities for each phase. •    Assessing the progress children are making in phonics and tracking their progress. •    The Y1 Screening Check.

Session 4

•    How to address the issue of KS2 children who still have gaps in their phonic knowledge. •    Teaching spelling in Key Stage 2. •    Implementing a structured approach to the teaching of phonics and spelling/action planning/ Establishing priorities.

Tutor information and feedback

Caroline is an experienced Primary Literacy Consultant. She has taught across the Primary age range; Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. For twelve years, she worked as a Primary Literacy Consultant for a local authority until becoming a Consultant in 2012.

Her areas of expertise include raising standards in literacy, the teaching of reading and writing, subject leader support and accelerating progress in literacy.

She is known and respected for her clear and succinct advice on what the next steps should be to improve the teaching of literacy.

She is passionate about improving the teaching of literacy in Primary Schools and delivering lively, valuable training to enable teachers to deliver first class literacy for all children.
