Geometry for non-specialists in secondary schools

This one-day course is designed for non-specialist subject teachers and HLTAs who have to teach maths and who wish to develop both their subject knowledge and classroom practice in geometry. The course is highly practical. It will look at making links between the different areas within the subject and the development of the subject based on the mastery approach to learning.

Non maths specialists and HLTAs who have to teach maths at secondary level.

Course details

This hands and minds-on course will develop participants’ practical mathematical understanding and application within the classroom. It will improve their confidence in teaching geometry and enable them to effectively identify and address student’s misconceptions. Participants will be better equipped to tackle the challenge that teaching the new maths curriculum presents.

By the end of the day, participants will have improved knowledge of:

  • Pin boards and geometric reasoning
  • Remembering formulae, or using reasoning?
  • Rectangles to trapezia
  • What is pi? Where did it come from?
  • Pythagoras theorem
  • What is a sine?
  • When do we use pythagoras and not trigonometry?
  • Problem solving

Tutor information

The tutor is educated to Masters Level in Mathematics and Education, holds NCETM accreditation for leading professional development, and is a respected lecturer, adviser, trainer and teacher.
Twenty five years of experience gained working in Primary, Secondary and Higher Education both in the UK and Europe developed his knowledge and understanding of the teaching and learning of maths, at all levels. He is known for his practical approach to the subject and for improving progress and results in the most challenging of environments. He has built a repu-tation as being an excellent adviser, trainer and teacher.
