Dyspraxia in the primary and secondary school

This course is appropriate for teachers and senior leaders from primary, junior, middle and secondary schools

Dyspraxia in children is becoming more common, yet generally, people know little about this condition. Those with dyspraxia can be overlooked in the classroom, often perceived to be clumsy, immature or lacking concentration. A child might have difficulty accurately throwing a ball or using scissors, may struggle to copy or accurately follow instructions be they verbal or written. They can become socially isolated for not being able to do what others can and can become confused or upset when challenged for not doing what is expected. There are a variety of symptoms and the condition is not straightforward.

This one-day course aims to work alongside staff to help them to understand the different forms of dyspraxia and what it might feel like to have it. It explores the symptoms including gross and fine motor skills, auditory and visual perception, language, and emotional and social issues and considers how learners may be supported so that academic performance can be improved for the individuals concerned.

By the end of the course participants will:

  • have a better understanding of dyspraxia;
  • have developed some strategies to support learners;
  • know where to go for additional support.;
  • have shared experiences.

Meet the tutor

The tutor is a creative, practical trainer who is highly expereinced and who has a history of supporting people with learning differences, those who may have mental health issues and those who lack confidence in learning. She also supports, in whatever way required, those who teach, work or live with children or adults with these particular needs. She currently teaches those with complex emotional and academic needs in a children’s home, is a university mentor and supports both children and adults on a one to one basis to develop confidence with learning. She is incredibly passionate about her work and believes that any ability, when sensitively and appropriately channelled, can be developed to realise potential.

She has worked as an educational consultant in a hospital for young people and adults with acquired brain injuries and/or autism; has been a trustee and trainer for ParentLink, an organisation that supports families of children with special needs; and she was a board member at Bournemouth University.

Session 1: 9:30-10:45

  • Introductions.
  • Identifying the different aspects of dyspraxia, including gross motor skills; fine motor skills.
  • Practical examples of what it may be like to have dyspraxia.

Session 2: 11:00-12:15

  • Identifying the different aspects of dyspraxia, including auditory perception; visual perception; language; emotional and social issues.
  • Practical examples of what it may be like to have dyspraxia.
  • Overlap with other conditions.

Session 3: 1:00-2:15

  • Exploring teaching and support styles.
  • Sharing experiences
  • Why pupils may feel angry.

Session 4: 2:30-3:45

  • Strategies to support those with dyspraxia and how to improve the classroom environment.
  • Feedback.
