Teaching Reading and Developing Reading for Pleasure

This course is designed to support class teachers, literacy subject leaders, senior managers and headteachers. It explores methods used to teach early reading and develop reading for pleasure. The detailed session time table and course objectives below provide more detail of the course content.

Course Overview and In-School Training Information

Participants will explore the methods used to teach early reading. They will discuss the role of the daily phonic session and encouraging the ability to decode words. The course explores the skills of deduction and inference and developing higher order comprehension skills. The course looks at developing reading journals, it explores the different types of reading and ways to develop the culture of a reading school. Participants will explore the role of book talks and ways to develop home-school links. The course also looks at the role of text based units in the teaching of reading; how to use a quality text to teach spelling, punctuation and grammar; using poetry to enrich reading experiences; developing a reading for pleasure ethos in the Primary School, and the skills needed to become a fluent reader

The course is aimed at teachers, including newly qualified teachers and higher level teaching assistants, in Infant, Primary and Middle schools who want to achieve consistently good teaching.
