Teaching Phonics and Spelling

This one day course helps schools to develop a structured approach to the teaching of phonics and spelling across the Primary age range. The course is suitable for Headteachers, Subject Leaders, Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 teachers. The course explores the daily phonic session in the Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1, the content of all six phases of phonics, and it looks at games and activities for all the phonic phases. The course looks at assessment, progress tracking and action planning for teachers of phonics and spelling.

Course Overview and In-School Training Information

The course examines the role of phonics in the teaching of early reading and writing and the vocabulary of phonics. It explores the four parts to the daily phonic session and scrutinizes the characteristics of a good phonics session. The course goes on to explore the content of the six phases, the expectations for each year group and games and activities for each phase. The course also looks at assessing the progress children are making in phonics and tracking their progress, plus the Y1 Screening Check. Participants will investigate how to address the issue of KS2 children who still have gaps in their phonic knowledge and they will look at teaching spelling in Key Stage 2, action planning and establishing priorities.
