Promoting and Evaluating the Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural Curriculum (SMSC)

This course helps participants to get an understanding of how to analyse their current SMSC provision.

It will highlight each of the key principles of SMSC, helping to identify areas of strength and potential elements which may need to be updated or developed further. It will help participants to consider where essential improvements may need to be made at their own settings across the curriculum.

Course Overview

This course is designed to help and support headteachers, senior leaders, curriculum leaders and school governors in primary schools. Participants will gain an understanding of how to analyse their current SMSC provision in light of the current Ofsted Guidance. By the end of the course, participants will be able to go back to their own schools and consider whether they are getting the best out of their curriculum, staff and children with regards to SMSC. They will be able to assess current practices and evaluate where improvements may be made. They course will help participants to focus on:

  • The new ofsted definitions and their implications
  • The current practice in your school
  • The current provision in your school
  • How embedded is SMSC across the whole staff?
  • Ofsted Guidance links with SMSC – reading between the lines
  • Defining or redefining SMSC
  • The curriculum spread of SMSC within the new curriculum
  • Tracking measures for SMSC
  • Action planning for the future
