The course is designed to help the school meet and exceed specific National Curriculum reading expectations by:

  • Facilitating the development of flexible guided reading sessions that encourage links between reading, writing and GPS

Course Overview

Using a variety of texts and innovative teaching ideas, we will explore a more flexible approach to guided reading, leading to excellent attainment and understanding. We include practicalities of how to resource and organise sessions; ideas and texts for guided reading genres (including video clips from the classroom); analysis of reading strands in the National Curriculum and model long & medium guided reading genre plans.

Who can attend?

This course is designed for teachers and those involved with the teaching of reading within an educational setting. The course is suitable for practitioners from Primary, Junior and Middle schools. It is appropriate for those from mainstream schools, academies, special and independent schools. The course is not intended for headteachers, deputies or assistant headteachers.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course participants will:

  • Be clear on National Curriculum expectations for reading
  • Know specific ways to teach each National Curriculum strand
  • Be able to explore the changing structure of guided reading and the benefits of flexible sessions embedded in English lessons
  • Be able to use question stems to encourage in-depth thinking about a text
  • Be confident to use a variety of genres including picture books, modern texts, poetry, media and reasoning to develop reading skills
  • Have a wealth of examples of motivating activities and games

Meet the tutors: Rachel and Louise

The course is provided by two current practitioners, Rachel and Louise.

Louise is an outstanding teacher and leader with over ten years’ experience in Primary education. She has taught across KS2 in Cambridgeshire, Shropshire and Staffordshire – even a few working holidays in Romania! She has a Cambridge First in English & Education and is passionate about sharing her love of literature, drama and writing with pupils. Louise has taught in Year 6 since 2013 and each year over 90% of the class have made outstanding progress.

Rachel, an outstanding teacher and Maths Leader, has a passion for Primary education. She has taught in KS1 and KS2 in several counties, including Staffordshire. Rachel has a Master’s degree in teaching English and is currently studying for a second Master’s degree in teaching Maths. She is dedicated and enthusiastic in enabling pupils to see links in their learning in a range of contexts. She has been a SAT marker and school governor since 2011. Rachel has taught in Year 6 since 2010 and each year, children have made excellent progress.
