This course is highly practical. The course explores strategies to enable senior leaders, to bring about improvements in the quality of teaching. Many practical ideas for participants to implement within their own schools are presented. Each participant will leave with a digital toolkit.

Course Overview

This one day is course is aimed at headteachers and senior leaders. It is highly practical. It provides senior leaders with an understanding of the requirements of becoming outstanding, and looks at the current requirements of the inspection framework, 2012 onwards. The course explores strategies to enable senior leaders, to bring about improvements in the quality of teaching. Many practical ideas for participants to implement within their own schools are presented. Each participant will leave with a digital toolkit.

Course Objectives

Course Objectives: To consider school organisation, teams and best practice in leadership, management and governance for all sizes of primary schools to work towards and maintain outstanding status. To explore strategies for staff to deliver outstanding lessons with links to appraisal, support from colleagues through coaching, and from monitoring by the school Senior Leadership Team, and subject leaders. Helping schools to join up the aspects to become outstanding within inspection criteria – Pupil progress, Quality of teaching, Behaviour and safety, Leadership. Management and Governance – working smarter!

Detailed course outline and session time table

Session 1

Welcome and introductions What does Outstanding look like? Being organised – communication and relationships.   Leadership, management and governance.
  • a. Responsibilities – Staffing – jobs - deployment – Teaching Assistants, governors,
  • b. Communication calendar / self- evaluation cycle - SEF to SDP!
  • c. SLT monitoring and accountability  – What will you do with what you find?
  • Pupil progress data and tracking..
  • d. Managing time, SMART, Timetables, & routines  Staff Meetings, PPM, Curriculum balance.
  • e. Governor meetings – organisation  – Safeguarding, Pupil premium / PE funding.
  • f. Headteacher reports to governors – Link Governors - a Governors’  handbook and meeting agendas.
  • g. Ofsted and DfE websites, Inspection Handbook.

Session 2

Improving the quality of teaching – school expectations
  • a. What are we looking for in the classroom to ensure pupil’s receive their entitlement?
  • b. Using the Teachers National Standards for all staff,  more experienced staff and
  • c. Teaching Assistants - a WAGOLL!    A school protocol for performance management.
  • d. Non-negotiables – starting the day / lessons routines – using AfL – School expectations.
  • e. School Teaching File to set out expectations in every classroom.
Developing our Curriculum
  • a. Consider the school characteristics and skills available*
  • b. Use of Time, Space and Place
  • c. Personal learning and thinking skills – PLEATS!
  • d. Planning our time line for development.

Session 3

Improving classroom practice
  • a. Key questions to improve the quality of teaching – roles and responsibilities in the
  • Classroom.
  • b. Teaching planning – The hooks - Organising PPA time. - Classroom
  • management -  Pupil behaviour and conduct – Values – rules age progressive.
  • What are the characteristics of good learning?
  • c. What are staff good at in their teaching? What do they want to improve?
  • Rich questioning – visual stimulus - Mantle of the expert – hot seating, authentic fakes!
  • d. The culture of collegiate coaching – professional support for each other.
  • e. SMSC in action, an understanding for staff - Independent thinking and learning.

Session 4

Middle managers and subject leaders
  • a. Middle managers - Subject Leaders -  Mini SEF’s ,
  • b. Your Vision for the responsibility. Planning ahead – an overview.
  • c. Termly action planning, monitoring , evaluating and reporting.
  • d. Safeguarding in the classroom, by subject , behaviour management.
  • e. Inclusion / SENCo – Interventions - Case studies.
  • f. Monitoring the progress of Pupil Premium pupils.
  • g.  Monitoring, 'Drop ins' , Learning walks, and reports to parents – learning partnerships.
  • h. Gathering the views and evidence – Pupil voice – getting to the ‘passengers’!
  • i. Our next steps, evaluations and close of the course.
