Motivating year 5 & 6 to outstanding achievement: Learning with purpose in English & Maths

This is a one-day course for Y5 and Y6 teachers. The sessions aim to enable Y5 and Y6 teachers to motivate all pupils (including gender groups and pupil premium) to make rapid and sustained progress within the new curriculum. The course is highly practical and skill based; participants will be given a range of ideas, skills and practical resources that they can use in the classroom straight away.

Participants will begin by looking at National Curriculum end of year expectations and how to ensure children and parents are aware of these through realistic but aspirational target setting. Using current research, we will analyse reasons why some children may be unmotivated and explore practical ways to engage them at our own educational establishments.

The second and third sessions will focus on specific ways to create and sustain purpose in Outstanding English and maths lessons, using pupil voice, engaging modern texts and creating links between subjects and thinking. As reading comprehension, poetry and GPS are often cited as problem areas in upper KS2, these will be given priority in the English session. In maths, children often struggle to apply their learning to different contexts. This session therefore aims to support participants in inspiring children to be creative with their knowledge application. Tasks and resources will include linking maths to English texts, quality questioning, threading maths throughout the wider curriculum and again, setting tasks with real-life purpose. We will also explain ways to evidence and analyse the impact of these motivational activities, including pupil voice. Activities, proformas and usable templates will be provided.

Lastly, we will explore how bringing the wider world to the classroom can increase motivation, leading to higher achievement. This session will explore how to plan cross-curricular learning around visitors from our local communities.
