  Aimed at: Headteachers, senior/middle leaders and team leaders in primary and secondary schools who are responsible for the appraisal and performance management of teaching staff Topic: Developing the appraisal and performance management skills of headteachers, senior and middle leaders   Course details: The effective appraisal and performance management of staff is an important part of a school’s strategy for raising the quality of teaching. Recently, new guidance for appraisal, the Teaching Standards and performance related pay have all been introduced; Ofsted inspectors now examine the impact of these in schools. This course will explain what schools need to have in place, and the skills required, for the successful appraisal and performance management of staff.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course participants will gain an understanding of:

  • The current regulations regarding appraisal and performance management
  • Using the Teaching Standards and the Ofsted criteria for appraisal and performance management
  • How to appraise and performance manage staff effectively including setting objectives, monitoring performance and feeding back to colleagues
  • How Ofsted evaluate the impact of appraisal and performance management in schools
  • How to develop the link between performance and pay

Method of Tuition

The course will be a mixture of tutor-led input and discussion sessions involving course participants; the latter will be in small groups in order to share ideas effectively. Additionally, there will be opportunities for participants to ask questions throughout the day and for them to reflect on the key learning points

Session 1: 9:30-10:45

  • The current requirements – appraisal and performance management
  • The Teachers’ Standards
  • The relevance of the headteacher and non-teaching staff standards
Session 2: 11:00-12:15
  • The appraisal process and timescales
  • What do good objectives look like?
  • Monitoring progress towards objectives
Session 3: 1:00-2:15
  • Lesson observations and appraisal
  • Using the Teachers’ Standards and the Ofsted criteria
  • Feeding back to colleagues as part of the appraisal process
Session 4: 2:30-3:45
  • The current requirements – performance related pay
  • Developing the link between performance and pay
  • How Ofsted evaluate the effectiveness of these areas

Tutor information

The tutor has been a consultant and school inspector, in the primary and secondary sector, for over fifteen years. He currently works with governors, headteachers and senior and middle leaders in a number of areas, including appraisal, performance management and performance related pay. Additionally, he is an education adviser for the Department for Education and an associate for the National College for Teaching and Leadership.
