Mathematics: Developing Mastery with Greater Depth

In order to be successful mathematicians, pupils need to develop deeply embedded procedural and conceptual understanding of mathematics.

Participants will understand the importance of effective questioning to not only probe pupils understanding but also to deepen their mathematical thinking

Within this course participants will gain an understanding of how to teach for reasoning, fluency and greater depth of understanding, helping pupils to develop deep structural knowledge.

Many topics within mathematics are taught in isolation hindering the ability of pupils to make the connections necessary to become successful mathematicians so within this course, participants will have the opportunity to explore how to make practical links between topics in Mathematics.

Through practical activities participants will develop their knowledge of ways to encourage pupils to become independent, multi-step, problem solvers. They will know how to achieve good and outstanding maths teaching.

Delegates will have access to ongoing e-mail support from the tutor. The support is available for one month after the course and is designed to give participants the chance to try out the techniques taught within the course and then contact the tutor with any questions that arise.

Session 1: 9:30-10:45

  • What is mathematical reasoning?
  • Encouraging mathematical reasoning with teacher questioning and discussion of strategies

Session 2: 11:00-12:15

  • What is mathematical problem solving?
  • Are word problems the same as problem solving?

Session 3: 1:00-2:15

  • Does investigative mathematics have a role to play?
  • How to use problems to highlight mathematical structure and relational understanding
  • Structuring the stages of problem solving

Session 4: 2:30-3:45

  • Embedding them all in planning, marking and assessing

Meet the course tutor

Russell is an independent mathematics adviser & author of text books in the primary and secondary sectors who has taught mathematics and worked with teachers in all five national-curriculum key stages. He has worked in schools with students and teachers in England and mainland Europe over the past twenty years.

Russell’s published work is for leading publishing houses and focuses on mastery and greater depth. He holds NCETM accreditation for leading professional development, and is a respected lecturer, adviser, trainer and teacher.

What prompted you to create this course and why is pertinent to the needs of teachers / senior leaders / educational professionals today?

In my visits to many schools, and listening to course delegates, it is apparent to me that many practitioners are struggling with understanding how to teach for greater depth of understanding, so within the course we will explore teaching for greater depth in detail.

Many topics within mathematics are taught in isolation, hindering the ability of pupils to make the connections necessary to becoming successful mathematicians so within this course, participants will have the opportunity to explore how to make practical links between topics in Mathematics.

What impact this course is designed to have in school?

The course is designed to improve teaching and learning within mathematics and to promote an understanding of how to develop deep structural knowledge, enabling reasoning and fluency so that less time spent revisiting and revising and meaning that there are fewer misconceptions to address. The course is also designed to promote an understanding of where to make topic links and how to teach for reasoning and multi-step problem solving.
