The course is aimed at teachers at Primary level, staff, NQTs support staff, subject leaders, head teachers and governors in primary and middle schools.

Course details

This course aims to give teachers an insight into what is meant by a Maths Mastery curriculum. It explores ways of delivering maths lessons from a maths mastery standpoint. Through task related seminars, participants will consider the mathematical content at this level and how to deliver it to develop students’ mastery of the subject. The course explores how to teach concrete and pictorial representations of mathematics, and the reasons for doing so. It looks at ways of developing and deepening a student’s structural knowledge. Delegates will look at how connections can be made between the different areas of mathematics. Participants will look at ways to plan learning which ensure that they:
  • Meet the needs of the curriculum.
  • Put investigative attitudes at the heart of all maths learning.
  • Make the best use of time.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course participants will have insight into:

  • what mastery of  maths means in terms of the new curriculum,
  • how and why to teach concrete and pictorial representations of mathematics,
  • how to develop their students deep structural knowledge,
  • how to make connections between different mathematical areas,
  • how to plan learning that makes the best use of time, puts an investigative attitude at the heart of all maths learning, and meets the needs of the curriculum.

Session 1: 9:30-10:45 Understanding what mastery means when teaching Mathematics

  • The Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract approach
  • How to define mathematical mastery for planning and assessment
Session 2: 11:00-12:15 Schemes of Work
  • How to design a curricula that  every child can master
  • Take a look at off the shelf schemes of work that promote mastery and some that do not
Session 3: 1:00-2:15 Develop teaching that supports Mastery at KS1
  • Developing teaching  of patterns
  • Developing links between different areas of mathematics
  • Effective questioning  skills that promote the learning of maths
  • Making use of mathematical representations
Session 4: 2:30-3:45 Develop teaching that supports Mastery at KS2
  • Developing teaching  of patterns
  • Developing links between different areas of mathematics
  • Effective questioning  skills that promote the learning of maths
  • Making use of mathematical representations
