Sadly asbestos in schools has recently hit the headlines following the death of a teacher who died from Mesothelioma. The inquest into her death heard that the only place that she could have been exposed to asbestos fibres was at school. National Union of Teachers representative Pete Sopowski said: ‘There’s a huge problem in schools. It’s a case of which schools don’t have it rather than which do.’ (Daily mail: Mail Online published 13:22, 28 November 2013) Fines relating to the management of asbestos in schools have also recently featured within news articles after an academy in Birmingham was fined for failure to properly manage refurbishment works, potentially endangering school workers. It is a legal requirement under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012 that anyone who might come into contact with Asbestos during the course of their work, and those who supervise them, have to undergo awareness training. This includes staff and maintenance people who may become exposed to asbestos while carrying out their normal everyday work, for example; entering boiler rooms where asbestos is present, or changing light fittings in asbestos-tiled ceilings, This is likely to include maintenance staff and caretakers and is also relevant to some building managers, bursars, headteachers and governors. Delegates will gain a greater understanding of asbestos, the dangers associated with it, and the legal requirements that relate to them. Delegates will be given a certificate supplied by a member of the Independent Asbestos Training Providers (IATP), as recommended by the HSE.

A Few Facts.

  • Up to 20 people each week die from Asbestos related diseases from all sectors of industry, this figure includes teachers.
  • It is believed that over 75 per cent of Britain’s state schools contain asbestos, a large proportion of which is badly maintained, potentially exposing children and staff to asbestos fibres.
  • Figures indicate that more than 140 school teachers have died from mesothelioma in the past ten years. An unknown number of caretakers, administrative staff and cleaners have also died.
  • There is no accurate data regarding the number of children who have died as a result of exposure to asbestos while at school. In the United Sates it was estimated that for every teacher’s death, nine children will die. If these figures are correct this would mean that over 100 people die every year in the UK as a result of exposure to asbestos when they were at school.
  • Asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999 and any building built up to and including that date may contain Asbestos.
