The PBM School Improvement Service

The PBM Annual School Improvement Service provides an independent view of the school and its’ priorities for improvement. The service helps the school to validate its’ judgements and priorities. Once validation is complete, the service monitors the process of improvement and measures the progress made. The service is provided by highly qualified and experienced consultants who have a background within inspection and SIP work. The service can be tailored to school or cluster requirements. The service can be provided as a single ‘stand alone’ service, or it can be provided as part of a more comprehensive annual support package, the benefit being cost efficiency.

The PBM school improvement service assumes that a rigorous detailed audit and self evaluation health check has already been carried out by the school. Schools who have not completed a detailed audit, who wish to take the hard work and uncertainty out of self evaluation, may wish to purchase an audit and health check through PBM. Various Audit models are available. Further details are available on this site.

The PBM School Improvement Service will:

  • Provide external, independent assistance validating the school’s judgements;
  • Scrutinise the evidence that supports the chosen priorities for improvement;
  • Help the school to monitor the implementation and impact of their planned improvement.

Impact is evaluated through:

  • Improved/sustained high quality academic outcomes as shown by analysis of national and school data, the pupils’ motivation and enthusiasm for learning, their response to lessons and their views expressed during discussion.
  • Improved/sustained high quality personal outcomes, as shown by the pupils’ good or better behaviour and the safe, secure, welcoming learning environment.
  • Improved/sustained high quality of teaching as shown by long-term progress indicators and learning and enjoyment in lessons.
  • Improved/sustained accuracy of teacher assessment as shown by work sampling and by effective intervention groups.
  • Improved/sustained quality of leadership as shown by upward trend in academic outcomes, well motivated pupils, well motivated teachers who have a clear understanding of school priorities and direction, and a sustained team effort.

All models of service are tailored to the school’s or cluster’s requirements. The service is flexible and is designed to meet your needs.

The service is designed to meet the needs of each individual school. The service begins with a telephone conversation to discuss the school’s requirements. The model below provides an example of a half day visit per term. This is intended as a starting point from which the service can be tailored to your school’s requirements. The standard model provides a half day visit per term. This can be extended to a full day or more, subject to negotiation.

To arrange to speak to a consultant regarding this service please telephone: 01889 567014 or e-mail admin@pbm-group.co.uk.

Example: Half-Day Visit Programme Model

Overview:
  • The half day visit model provides three half-day visits during the academic year, typically one per term.
  • A half-day visit is either 9 am to 12 noon or 1 pm to 4 pm (3 hours on site).
  • Each visit has 150 minutes of discussion, focused observation, and analysis, and 30 minutes for the consultant to reflect on findings and complete documentation to be given to the school.
  • In advance of the visit, the school will need to provide their SEF, or an alternative self-evaluation document, RAISE online, and school improvement plan.
  • Prior to commencement of the service, the school and PBM will confirm the programme for all support visits during the year.

Outcomes at the end of each visit:

The consultant will provide the school with a concise summary of the evidence, the progress towards improvement and an outline of the action required to bring about improvement.

Example: Half-Day Visit Programme Model

Example: Term 1

  • The consultant will meet the SMT* (60 minutes): analyse RAISE online and other data to explore judgements, identify pupil outcome issues both academic (attainment and progress) and personal (behaviour and feeling safe), and compare with school improvement priorities.
  • Learning-walk to validate the judgements and the priorities (60 minutes). Visit three lessons, ideally in YR, Y2, Y6. In the lessons seen, check progress indicators, accuracy of teacher assessment and behaviour.
  • Consultant reflection time (30 minutes) to review evidence and produce a summary document.
  • Feedback to SMT (30 minutes). Review school judgements in light of classroom evidence and confirm core improvement priorities. Present summary document.

Documented outcomes: evidence forms from discussion, learning walk, summary document given to SMT at feedback meeting prior to departure.

Example: Term 2

  • Meet the SMT* (60 minutes) to check on progress towards achieving core priorities and to establish improvement priorities for next 12 months. Main focus is on teaching and the curriculum.
  • Learning-walk to audit impact of school improvement strategies (60 minutes). Visit three lessons where there were issues previously. In the lessons, check quality of teaching, progress indicators, accuracy of teacher assessment, behaviour, and progress towards achieving main school improvement goals.
  • Consultant reflection time (30 minutes) to review evidence and produce a summary document.
  • Feedback to SMT (30 minutes). Review school judgements in light of classroom evidence and confirm core improvement priorities. Establish relevant, challenging but achievable success criteria. Present summary document.

Example: Term 3

  • Meet the SMT* (60 minutes) to analyse the school’s progress tracking and to check on progress towards achieving core priorities. Main focus is on leadership and management.
